Our La Rose Favourites

A few weeks ago, we were almost doubling our grocery bills, anyone else? I realized pretty quickly that we needed to be more cautious, and meal planning (for the most part) is the best way to stay on a budget. We are curving our eating habits for the time being because getting to the grocery store for everything fresh isn't always possible these days. We are trying to focus on meals that can feed us twice.

If you're in Milton, I bet La Rose is one of your favourite spots. Did you know they are offering delivery and curbside pickup? Here are a few of our favourite items and the ways we make them stretch.

Pasta & Sauce (everyone's favourite, right?) La Rose has a great selection of Gluten-Free Pasta. Anthony loves the Rummo brand. I buy that for him and get the kids noodly pasta, and a container of their fresh tomato & basil sauce. I divide the sauce into two containers. One night it's fresh pasta and tomato sauce, and a few days later, we will use the rest of the sauce with baked chicken and fresh vegetables.

Polenta is super cheap and so good when it's prepared the right way. This is how I make ours: 4 cups of water with 1tbs of better than bouillon (chicken or vegetable) Bring to a boil and add 1 cup of polenta stir consistently for 10 mins with a wooden spoon until thick. Add 1 cup of fresh parm (la Rose sells it in a block or grated) and 1/2 a cup of milk. Serve hot with salt & pepper and freshly grated parm. I take the leftovers and store them in a container in the fridge the next day. From the refrigerator I  form the polenta into small balls you can add more cheese if you like, coat in GF bread crumbs, and fry in olive oil on the stovetop, serve with tomato sauce.

Pizza dough, La Rose has everything you need to make the best homemade pizza. One bag of dough (available in white or whole wheat) is enough to make two pizzas. We use standard cookie sheets dusted with flour. We cook one right away and freeze the other. OR you can take half the dough, work in 1 cup of cheddar, and make twisty pizza sticks. Coat the tops in butter and a sprinkle of salt before baking at 350 for about 15-20 mins. Serve with the leftover pizza sauce.

I would love to hear the ways you are saving money on your grocery bills.
