Our Laundry Room
After 15 years of doing laundry in a less-than-ideal situation, I was overjoyed when we moved into our new home and found the laundry room conveniently located on the first floor. No more spiders or unexpected visitors from the basement drain. This change has made my laundry routine so much more manageable and enjoyable. To maximize every inch of space, I transformed an extra closet into a pantry-style storage space for all my tablescape decor. This practical solution lets me see everything I have at a glance, ensuring nothing is forgotten and setting the table and tidying up a breeze.
If I were a few inches taller, I would have taken the cabinetry to the top, but I can barely reach the doors where they are now. I spent a lot of time organizing the shelves thoughtfully. I didn’t want them to be a dumping ground for clutter. The cabinets are from Ikea, and I painted them the same colour as the bead board. I used a baseboard grade, so cleaning and picking dirt off is easy.
I’ve been inspired by Monika Hibbs’s laundry room for years and wanted to do full wallpaper. Hers was too expensive, so I found a similar print on Amazon. The laundry room has a shared door with Garage access, so I used beadboard halfway up the wall to make it easier to clean and repair if I drag something from the house into the garage to sand or paint. This happens often around here. Once I get an idea, there’s no turning back. We’ve had the washer and dryer for over a year, and I LOVE them! They are on the larger side, but washing a full sofa cover or king duvet without going to the laundry mat is so lovely. If you are in the market for new appliances, I highly recommend them.
I wanted a marble counter, but the budget didn’t allow so I went with an inexpensive counter from Ikea. We chose the blue tile from the builder; looking back, I wish we had carried the hardwood into the bathroom and laundry and not let the design associate talk us out of it. I do love the blue /grey floor because it always looks clean. The biggest splurge in the laundry room was the sink; we needed something big enough to bathe Gus and wanted a clean-looking counter around it. I love that sink. I can soak many linens at one time. The faucet was cheap from Amazon. I would recommend it after having it for almost a year and using it daily. I added an open shelf because I love having fresh flowers throughout the house. I spend a lot of time folding, and having a photo of my dad and me in that space brings comfort. I went with a simple feminine light fixture. The mix of gold and white is perfect for the space.
I hope this blog has given you some inspiration for your laundry space. If you are still folding with the spiders, just keep imagining yourself in the laundry room of your dreams. Mine took 15 years.
